Self-released – Release Date: 6/11/21
Earlier this month, Meat Wave released a six-song EP, titled Volcano Park. Despite their last full-length being released over four years ago, the band has returned sounding as angst-filled and inspired as ever. The first song, “Tugboat,” begins with a foreboding riff and a marching rhythm. An instrumental bridge emerges that aggressively thrashes between chords and slyly finds its way to a shouted chorus. The song culminates with an incendiary ending that accentuates the drumming of Ryan Wizniak. The next entry, “For Sale,” exudes old school Chicago punk, mixed with a hint of surf rock. It’s not unlike Naked Raygun, but Meat Wave definitely puts their own distinctive stamp on the style.
“Yell at the Moon” opens with a discreet intro that explodes into a seriously badass riff. Here, the whole band is working together, like a true power trio, to generate a ton of noise. The vocals of singer/guitarist Chris Sutter sound somewhat imposing, thanks in part to a burly, stomping rhythm. The song continues to intensify until the epic riff returns and the band lets loose. Sutter justifiably exhibits a bit of swagger near the end, delivering several rock ‘n’ roll howls. The next track, “Truth Died,” changes things up with a spacey, alt-rock vibe. It seems likely that its lyrics reference the political climate in America during the last four years, and this matches the mood of the instrumentation extremely well.
The final song on Volcano Park, “Fire Dreams,” starts with a chugging rhythm that sounds like a slow-moving freight train. It plods along, anchored by bassist Joe Gac, before a pensive verse takes shape. The vocals are somewhat haunting and similar in tone to the two-note guitar riff. The middle section shifts and gets fairly quiet, as the band demonstrates their mastery of dynamics, before the song rises to the record’s most powerful and chaotic section. “Fire Dreams” is by all accounts a multi-layered entry and highly representative of the EP as a whole. The writing, performances and production of these songs are all spot-on, with Meat Wave sounding as though they’re poised to create something truly exceptional with their next album.

Last month, Chicago’s High Priests released their debut album on Triple Eye Industries, called Spinning. The trio features Mikey Alesi, (vocals/guitar) Justin Gutierrez, (bass) and Mustafa Daka, (drums). Collectively, they’ve played in or currently play in bands such as: The Brokedowns, Wide Angles and Post Child. Recorded by Joe Gac, (Meat Wave) and mastered by Justin Perkins, the record does an impressive job of balancing the group’s inherent rawness with an appropriate amount of polish, thereby allowing the intricacies of the arrangements to really standout. When asked about the recording process, Daka said “I’ve recorded with Joe so many times over the years. He’s who I want to continue working with because I feel he gets better every time and he’s already amazing.”
We’re streaming the album’s opening track below, “Control,” which exemplifies the band’s fierce interpretation of contemporary noise-rock. When speaking as to how they typically go about songwriting, Daka said “Mikey usually comes in with a song and I beat my brain up a little to figure out any of his weird timings. Then Justin and I figure out parts that we think best complement what Mikey’s written and eventually they end up all being fun songs to play.” Take a listen to “Control” now and purchase the record here.
Last month, Meat Wave released their second full-length for Side One Dummy, called The Incessant. Recorded by engineer Steve Albini, the album finds the band refining their take on unabashed, hook-heavy post-punk. We spoke with singer/guitarist Chris Sutter about the record’s lyrics, many of which address themes like confrontation and accountability, yet there’s also a sense of dark humor that’s discreetly built-in. Additionally, we talked about the album’s writing process, what it was like working with Albini, their upcoming European tour and more. The band’s lineup is solidified by bassist Joe Gac and drummer Ryan Wizniak, and don’t forget to check out their video for “Run You Out” after the interview. Continue Reading…

For its inaugural year in Douglas Park, Riot Fest continued to grow and expand, while still retaining its formula of legacy acts mixed with eclectic and emerging artists. Despite the change of location, Riot Fest felt right at home in its new digs, taking advantage of an open layout that made for easy navigation from one stage to another. There was a little rain and a fair amount of mud, but those that weren’t deterred by the elements were treated to a surplus of memorable sets from a genuinely diverse collection of bands. We recapped some of our favorite moments and observations from what was an eventful, action-packed weekend. Written by Jamie Ludwig, (JL) and Bill Denker, (BD). Photos by Katie Hovland.
Back in December, The Brokedowns released their second album for Red Scare Industries, entitled Life Is a Breeze. Containing 16 songs in total, the record is not only comprehensive, but also a good representation of the band’s best characteristics. There are influences of Dillinger Four and Hot Snakes to be found, but those are overshadowed by The Brokedowns’ unique take on Midwestern punk and the sheer amount of aggression they generate in their songwriting. This Sunday, 3/01, they’re playing Beat Kitchen, along with Meat Wave, Canadian Rifle and Foul Tip. The show starts at 8:00 PM, is 17+ and costs $8. Check out a track from Life Is a Breeze below, called “Born on the Bayou Too.”
