Earlier this month, The Addisons released a cover of one of Naked Raygun’s most beloved songs, “Vanilla Blue.” When Naked Raygun bassist Pierre Kezdy sadly passed away last month, The Addisons chose to put out this song, which Kezdy wrote, as a tribute to him. In terms of how they went about interpreting the song, bassist Rick Uncapher said “We really didn’t think about it too much. We just learned it, played it and recorded it pretty quick. Daisun DeRik, our old drummer, recorded it at his house in Brookfield. Tom, (singer/guitarist Tom Counihan) mixed it at his house in Aurora and Justin Perkins did the mastering at Mystery Room in Milwaukee.” He continued, “We’ve all been huge Raygun fans dating way back. Dave, (singer/guitarist Dave Lysien) and Tom’s old band, Not Rebecca, got to open for Raygun at the Riv in the early ‘90s, so we just wanted to pay tribute the best we could.” When asked about Pierre’s legacy, Uncapher added “Pierre was a really sweet guy. Super friendly, funny and humble. As a musician, we’ll remember his bass tone and his bold stage presence. And of course, we’ll remember his songs.” Check out The Addisons’ rendition of “Vanilla Blue” below and for those interested in helping out, there’s a GoFundMe campaign that was launched by Kezdy’s family.
Earlier this month, The Addisons released their latest EP, called 100% Familiar. It was recorded by Jeff Dean at Million Yen Studios and mastered by Justin Perkins, and contains a total of five songs. When asked about the writing process for this record, singer/guitarist Tom Counihan said, “These songs are the first that we worked out with our new drummer Jessie, (Carmona). I think he had a big effect on the way they ended up sounding. Dave, (singer/guitarist Dave Lysien) and I write the initial ideas separately, but once we bring songs into the band, we all contribute to working out arrangements, bridges, etc.”
When comparing 100% Familiar to the band’s previous material, Counihan said “I think we tried to challenge ourselves a little more on this release. While we were getting ready to record, we spent a lot of time kind of dissecting the songs and trying to be more purposeful about each part.” Bassist Rick Uncapher added, “It’s definitely in the same vein as what we’ve been doing, but I think we tried to change it up a bit to keep things interesting. It’s probably subtle, but there are a lot of guitar effects, keyboards, background vocals and added percussion that we did to fill out the songs.” Check out the EP below and head to Bandcamp to buy a copy.
We’re premiering a new song below, called “Fake It,” from Chicago’s The Addisons. It was produced by Jeff Dean, (Airstream Futures, All Eyes West, The Bomb) at Million Yen Studios and represents the band’s first recording since the addition of drummer Jesse Carmona, (formerly of God’s Reflex). When speaking about how the song came together, bassist Rick Uncapher said “It developed around the drum beat that Jesse came up with and sort of took on a life of its own. We’ve been doing the melodic pop thing for a while and it’s fun to see where else we can take the songs without straying too far from our sound.” The song is available now on all digital platforms and also marks The Addisons’ first new music since releasing their Here It Comes Again EP last year. Catch them this Saturday, October 5th at The Elbo Room with Pollinators, The Last Afternoons, Gooey, and Frankie B. The show starts at 7:00 PM, is 21+ and tickets are $7 in advance.

On August 9th, The Addisons are scheduled to release their second EP, Here It Comes Again. Recorded and produced by Mike Felumlee of The Smoking Popes, the record finds the band noticeably advancing their interpretation of Midwestern indie/punk. The Addisons’ roster consists of singer/guitarists Dave Lysien, (Not Rebecca, Textbook) and Tom Counihan, (Not Rebecca, Tom Daily). Anchoring the rhythm section is bassist Rick Uncapher, (Textbook, Dan Vapid and the Cheats, Noise By Numbers) and the newest addition, drummer Jesse Carmona, (Gods Reflex, The Braves).
When asked about recording with Felumlee, Counihan said “I’ve been playing and recording with Mike on and off for over 20 years, since I played with him in the Smoking Popes. He played drums on a bunch of my solo recordings, so it was very natural to record with him.” He added, “I just like the tones of the recordings. Mike and I have similar tastes in music, so the mixes, especially the drum sounds, are right where I like them.”
We’re streaming one of the songs from Here It Comes Again below, called “Down Down Down.” When speaking of what inspired its creation, Counihan said “The song came together really quickly. I wrote it in my car at lunch one day. I had my guitar in the back seat and I started and finished in less than an hour. I recorded it onto my phone and sent it to the rest of the band right away. The next practice we started working on turning it into a full band version. I don’t write songs nearly as often as I used to, so it was great to have it be so painless.” Take a listen to the track now and on Thursday, get the record here.
